Introduction

The Maitreya Project is a major undertaking intended to bring lasting benefit* to as many as possible, for as long as possible throughout the next millennium.

The Project will be located in Kushinagar, Uttar Pradesh State, India  the site of the passing away of the historical Buddha approximately 2,500 years ago, and an important location within the Buddhist pilgrimage circuit in northern India. Kushinagar is predicted to be the place where, in the distant future, Maitreya Buddha will appear on earth.

The Project aims to be a model of socially responsible development and is therefore working closely with the state government in Uttar Pradesh to ensure the Projects activities and the regions development are complementary. The Kushinagar Special Development Area has been established by the State Government of Uttar Pradesh in order to support planned development in the area surrounding the Maitreya Project.

The Project includes provision for major educational and healthcare programmes, which in time are planned to extend to the whole of the newly established Kushinagar Special Development Area with a current population of 300,000. Maitreya Project is held and plans to operate as a trust in perpetuity.

There is growing international interest in visiting the sites of northern India that are historically significant to the Buddhas life and the development of Buddhism. Within Asia, government planners are anticipating an ever-increasing flow of pilgrims and visitors from China and other Asian countries to Indias holy Buddhist sites.   The Maitreya Project will act as a focus, helping to make one of the holiest places of Buddhist pilgrimage accessible to visitors from all over the world.
